Global Forum on Science and Technology for Disaster Resilience 2017

Based on the post-2015 framework (Sendai Framework) for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) that was adopted at the 3rd World Conference on DRR in Sendai in March 2015, the Global Forum on Science and Technology for Disaster Resilience 2017 was held at the Science Council of Japan from November 23-25, 2017 to ascertain contribution and future actions through discussion among global scientists and to share the message with all stakeholders, including policy makers and private sector.

Prof. Ikeuchi presented the Academic-Industry Collaboration Program “Water Cycle Data Integrator (WCI)” during the Science & Technology-Enterprise Cooperation poster session at the Forum. Prof. Kawasaki served as Co-Chair of the Panel on the Priority 3: Investing in Disaster Risk Reduction for Resilience throughout the Forum.

The Forum aimed to promote all stakeholders to develop plans for the following outputs through working together in interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary way: 1) guidelines for strengthening DRR national platforms and coordination mechanisms through enhanced contribution of science and technology, 2) periodic synthesis reports on the state of science and technology for reducing disaster risks.

Attended by the Crown Prince of Japan, Mr. Okonogi (Minister of State for Disaster Management), Dr. Glasser (Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of UNISDR), Dr. Han Seung-Soo (UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Disaster Risk Reduction and Water), Prof. McBean (President of ICSU), and representatives from UNESCO, WMO, OECD, GEO, etc., the High-Level Panel Conference was held and the Tokyo Statement 2017: Science and Technology Commits- Actions for a Disaster Resilient World was declared on the last day.

Prof. Ikeuchi and Prof. Kawasaki have been deeply involved in this Forum from the initial planning stage as committee members.
